Here’s an infographic slide made by Alison Blank called Math is not linear, which depicts her (or his?) views on Math education. I personally find this very insightful because of two main reasons:
Firstly, the presentation is amazingly understandable, simple and tidy. It is easy to follow up the ideas and they are presented in a way that can give you the reasons in the correct order and the answers to the questions that may arise in the precise moments. Examples are present to make us understand the concepts and are enough not to bore us out of the presentation.
Secondly, the ideas presented transcend math education and could be applied to any area of education, it points out to the way on how things are learned and taught. Such a change on education point of view could really improve the way that kids (or grown ups) see their education and the way they embrace it and even the way they feel about it. Of course, that would also change the results in a country’s education status – at a large scale, of course.
I think it deserves quite an attention and, on a sidenote, it’s the first time I’ve seen a web application that lets you create this kind of presentations. This is Prezi, and I think I’ll be using it from time to time. It’s a really nice way to share your thoughts in a way that can impress with a little more than words and images.
I’m a non-linear little skunk.
